The SantaLand Diaries Opens at Peterborough Players Sept. 16

Kraig Swartz Stars in this One-Man Comedy

Peterborough, NH (September 11, 2009) – The SantaLand Diaries, a comedy by David Sedaris and adapted by Joe Mantello, opens at the Peterborough Players professional theatre on September 16th. Players favorite Kraig Swartz plays Crumpet in this one-man show about Sedaris’s real-life experience as a Christmas elf in Macy’s Herald Square Department Store’s famed Santaland.

Swartz, who played Crumpet at the New Repertory Theatre in Boston last season to rave reviews, will keep the audience laughing in this comic, caustic tale. While SantaLand was written originally by David Sedaris as a true “diary” that he read aloud to various audiences, Tony-winning stage director Mantello saw it as theater: “David’s writing is so peculiar and twisted; I had to bring it to the stage.”

Christmas in September has never been funnier – and no one has to brave winter storms to get to the theatre. Please note that The SantaLand Diaries is NOT suitable for children.

The SantaLand Diaries

Two Exceptional Actresses Hold the Stage

Peterborough, NH (June 26, 2009) – The Peterborough Players professional theatre presents The Breath of Life, a drama by David Hare, starring Players’ favorite Dale Hodges and Tony nominee Laurie Kennedy. This morality tale tells the story of two women in their 60s whose lives are interwoven in ways they come to understand over the course of an unexpected visit.

At times funny and frequently moving, the play raises profound questions about how we deal with the past and move forward into the future. Hare writes: “You can no longer call it middle age, and you certainly can’t call it old age. It’s something in between . . . I wanted to describe two women at exactly that moment; a long past behind them, but the expectation of a considerable future in front of them.” The Times describes David Hare as “Britain’s leading contemporary playwright.”

The Peterborough Players is a fully air-conditioned theatre that is handicapped accessible. Free parking available on site; grounds and picnic tables may be used by patrons prior to show.

Peterborough Players’ Bad Dates a Good Night Out
One-Woman Play Keeps Audiences Laughing

Peterborough, NH
(June 22, 2009) –Bad Dates, a comedy by Theresa Rebeck, has audiences laughing at the Peterborough Players professional theatre. The show, which runs through Sunday, June 28th, is a one-woman play starring Susan Riley Stevens. Stevens, who won the Barrymore Award for Best Performance by an Actress when she performed the role at the Act 2 Playhouse in Philadelphia, has the timing and presence to keep the audience engaged and entertained throughout the two-act play.

Stevens takes the stage as the shoe-addicted, date-challenged Haley – a single mom who is doing her best to manage her finances, select the right pair of shoes, and find love. Players’ Artistic Director Gus Kaikkonen masterfully directs the play, managing to guide Stevens in such a way that the audience doesn’t realize that one woman is performing all the action.

Peterborough Players 2009 Season

BAD DATES – A Comedy by Theresa Rebeck – June 17-28
Start the summer season with a laugh! A single mother’s hilarious journey of self-discovery involves a Romanian mob, shoes, a Buddhist rainstorm, a teenage daughter, shoes, and a few very bad dates . . . and did we mention shoes? This show had an extended run Off Broadway and has been a hit at theatres across the country. Bring your high heels. Rated PG-13

THE BREATH OF LIFE – A Drama by David Hare – July 1-12
Gauguin’s epigram, “Life being what it is, one dreams of revenge,” serves as the motto for this moral tale of two women in their sixties whose lives are interwoven in ways neither of them yet understands. When one shows up at the other’s rural English flat, the result is a surprising meditation on what can emerge when a man’s wife and mistress finally confront each other. The events of this single night come to echo the hidden course of their lives. David Hare has been described by the New York Post as “one of the few major playwrights in our language.” Rated PG-13

I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE – A Musical Comedy with book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro, music by Jimmy Roberts – July 15-26
This celebration of the mating game takes on the truths and myths behind that contemporary conundrum we’ve all been part of known as "the relationship." Act I explores the romance and drama of dating and waiting to love and marriage. Fast forward to the realities of in-laws and newborns, trips in the family car, and pick-up techniques of the geriatric set in Act II. “Hilarious! The most entertaining show on or off Broadway!" – Gannett Newspapers Rated PG-13

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS – A Musical Comedy with book and lyrics by Howard Ashman, music by Alan Menken – July 29-August 16
An atypical musical that showcases a down-and-out skid row floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite. One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time, this affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies has become a household name, thanks to a highly successful film version and a brilliant musical score. Charming, tuneful, and hysterical, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Little Shop of Horrors never fails to entertain. Rated PG-13

HEARTBREAK HOUSE – A Comedy by George Bernard Shaw – August 19-30
This classic play is a haunting, bittersweet look at an affluent, ineffectual society on the brink of profound social change – a timeless theme. Humorous, biting, and remarkably topical, Heartbreak House is considered one of Shaw’s greatest plays. “Shaw’s bracing analysis of a civilization in decline seems more valuable than ever.  Almost a century after it was written, Heartbreak House provides a keen comic rebuke to cynicism, self-indulgence, and detachment.” – New York Times Rated PG

COPENHAGEN – A Drama by Michael Frayn – September 2-13
In 1941, two of the world's leading scientists – German physicist Werner Heisenberg and his Danish mentor and counterpart Niels Bohr – met in Copenhagen. Together they had revolutionized atomic science, but now they were on opposite sides of a world war. The mysterious visit on that night strained their relationship for the rest of their lives. In this incisive play, Frayn offers intriguing speculation about what may have taken place and shows two extraordinary men wrestling with complex issues in a situation fraught with danger. Winner of three Tony Awards, including Best Play in 2000. "The most invigorating and ingenious play of ideas in many a year. An electrifying work of art." – New York Times Rated PG-13

THE SANTALAND DIARIES – A Comedy by David Sedaris, adapted by Joe Montello – September 16-27
Best enjoyed when holiday stress is a distant glimmer, The Santaland Diairies is a witty evocation of life as a Macy's elf during the holiday crunch. At first the job is simply humiliating, but once thousands of visitors start pouring through Santa's workshop and an endless stream of Santas take turns ordering him around, Crumpet the Elf (played by Kraig Swartz) becomes battle-weary and bitter. But on Christmas Eve, something happens that startles our hero into an uncharacteristic moment of goodwill just before his employment runs out. "Priceless observations, both outrageous and subtle. Destined to hold a place in the annals of American humor writing." – New York Times Rated PG-13, (not suitable for children).

Peterborough, NH (February 17, 2009) – The Peterborough Players will hold auditions and interviews for the 2009 season from 6-10PM, Monday, March 2 (please call for a slot). Artistic Director Gus Kaikkonen will see auditions from members of Actors’ Equity, non-Equity local actors, and from those interested in joining the Players’ Second Company as an intern or apprentice. In addition to these sessions for the regular season, the Players will also see any high-school aged students interested in participating in its highly successful Ascending Stars collaborative project.

Equity members should prepare two contrasting monologues. The audition will be a general one for the entire season, not necessarily for specific roles. Rehearsals for this show start August 4 and performances run August 19-30.

Non-Equity actors should have at least one monologue prepared (memorized is preferred but not necessary) and be ready to read from the script.

The Second Company is comprised of interns and apprentices who make a minimum 13-week commitment to the Players’ season. Intern actors will perform in the two Second Company plays, and most will play a supporting role in at least one of the subscription series plays. In addition, Second Company members work in the various technical shops and offices, and serve on run crews. Work begins for the Second Company on June 4, 2009. Those interested in the Second Company should prepare two contrasting monologues and be prepared to sing something a cappella. In addition to auditions for Second Company actors, interviews will be held for those interested in technical or administrative internships or apprenticeships.

The 2009 subscription season consists of Bad Dates; The Breath of Life; I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change; Little Shop of Horrors; Heartbreak House; Copenhagen; and The Santaland Diaries. Second Company family productions are The Just So Stories and Anne of Green Gables.

The Ascending Stars collaborative project with local high school students has not yet been chosen. The production will feature the best in local high school talent, working alongside professional actors, directors, designers, and technicians in a roughly two-week rehearsal schedule similar to that used in the Players’ regular summer season. Any area high-school student (or high-school aged home-schooled student) who can get to Peterborough for rehearsals and performances is eligible to audition. Rehearsals are tentatively scheduled to begin May 18, with performances scheduled from June 4 through June 7. Students interested in auditioning should prepare at least one monologue (memorized is preferred but not necessary) and be ready to read from a script.

Scripts are available for perusal at the Players office. All are welcome to audition, but you must call to schedule an audition slot for March 2. To schedule a time or to obtain further information, call 603-924-9344.
