The Peterborough Players took home ten awards at the first annual New Hampshire Theatre Awards, which were presented January 24 at the Palace Theatre in Manchester.

Awards were given in both community and professional theatre. Prior to the 2002 season, the Players nominated its productions of THE CHERRY ORCHARD and PEOPLE LIKE US in the professional theatre category.

PEOPLE LIKE US won the award for Best Musical. In addition, Todd Almond (composer, book and lyrics) and Gus Kaikkonen (book and lyrics) won in the Best New Play category, and Kaikkonen was named best Director of a Musical.

THE CHERRY ORCHARD won the award for Best Drama. Kaikkonen took home his second directing award as Best Director – Non-Musical. Michael Page was named Best Supporting Actor for his role as Leonid Andreevich Gaev, and Pat Karpen was named Best Supporting Actress for her role as Charlotta Ivanovna. The design team for THE CHERRY ORCHARD – Charles F. Morgan for set design, William Armstrong for lighting design, and Henry Shaffer for costume design – swept the design awards.

“We are both proud of and surprised by our success at the New Hampshire Theatre Awards,” said Managing Director Keith Stevens. “There is a lot of terrific theatre happening in the state. This wonderful recognition of our work, whether for an individual or for an entire production, is a result of the efforts of the entire Peterborough Players team. Actors, staff, designers, interns, the Board of Trustees, the ‘In the Wings’ volunteers, our wonderful donors and patrons – each person’s work is vital and necessary for us to excel in our mission of producing the best possible theatre. Everyone involved deserves a piece of these awards.”

The Peterborough Players is sponsored in part by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the A. Erland and Hazel N. Goyette Memorial Fund, and the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Charitable Foundation.
