| Players Announce Plan
to Improve Stage October 18, 2004 Contact: At a gala event on Friday the fifteenth the Peterborough Players announced a campaign to improve their theatre space. The campaign, called the Raise the Roof Major Gift Initiative, has a target of raising $1,000,000 to renovate the stage and shop areas of the theatre. Recent years have seen improvements made to most of the audience areas including new seats in the theatre, an expanded office space and kitchen, a sprinkler system, and new bathrooms. However, throughout all these renovations, the stage itself has remained unchanged. The plan, according to Managing Director Keith Stevens is, “…to make the performance space friendlier to the artists who come here every summer and create quality theatre. That means fly space above the stage, a trap and orchestra pit under the stage, useful wing space on either side of the stage, an enclosed shop to build the sets, a costume shop attached to the theatre, and improved sightlines. We will not change the appearance the barn and thereby change the character of the theatre, but we do want to increase the options we have to create something great.” Board President Bob Pettegrew announced that to date
the Players has raised $687,547 toward the goal and that the public phase
of the campaign has started. The renovations are scheduled to start the
day after the 2005 season closes so that the 2006 summer season can open
on schedule. Also speaking at the event were Players alum James Whitmore
and longtime season ticket holder and ex-governor Walter Peterson. Mr.
Peterson pointed out the financial benefits of the theatre to the community
and Mr. Whitmore applauded the artistic integrity and longevity of this
great institution. |
