What do you get when you match the oldest and biggest auction in the Monadnock region with the most dynamic auctioneer in the state of New Hampshire? You get a rapid-fire evening at the Peterborough Players on November 6th, packed with new items, new games, and surprising new ways to move the merchandise. It promises to be a great party and a fitting way to conclude the company’s successful 71st season of offering professional summer theatre in “Our Town.”

To bring the excitement to a new level this year, planners of the event have enlisted professional auctioneer Kathy Kingston of Hampton. Highly in demand and extensively praised for her outstanding skills, quick wit and contagious energy, Kathy is expected to triple the fun-quotient (and fund-raising success) of the event. In addition to great items, the auction will offer sumptuous hors d’oeuvres from caterers throughout the region, a stunning array of desserts, and an open bar throughout the evening.

This year, expect scores of never-before-offered items side by side with many perennial favorites, and something for every budget. The big ticket items of the evening are two trips designed for the adventurous traveler. One is a six-day, six night South African Safari for two, with accommodations at a four-star game lodge (with four-star chefs) in the heart of Zululand. The second is a one-to-two week stay for four at a 3-bedroom luxury apartment in the heart of Tokyo’s Roppongi Hills district (all the best shopping and best dining in the city). If you’ve been dreaming of taking an exotic vacation, don’t miss the chance to bid on one of these.

For great getaways (that don’t require shots), consider 10 days in a Florida condo, a week’s stay in an English country cottage, two-nights at the magnificent Mountainview Grand Report and Spa in Whitefield, NH, a weekend for four in an elegant Capitol Hill row house in Washington, D.C. -- or just bid on a pair of roundtrip airline tickets to anywhere you may wish to travel in the continental U.S.

Auction-goers who want to eat closer to home can choose from a array of gourmet and theme dinners for 2, 4, 6, 8 or 12 people -- some prepared in your home by talented amateur chefs, some offered by regional restaurants, including The Bedford Village Inn, Mile-Away, La Bonne Table and Acqua Bistro.

In the category of Amazing Art, expect outstanding works by local oil and water-colorists (including the eminent painter, Dexter Dawes), sculptors, stained glass and wood-workers, silver jewelers, potters and creators of imaginative wearable art. Sports fans will be interested in a day of guided fly fishing on Lake Winnipesaukee, tickets to the Red Sox (not this season!), Patriots and Celtics, golf at Dublin Lake Club or Monadnock Country Club, a Crotched Mountain Ski Pass, membership at the Wellness Center, and a massage session to help you recover from all that activity.

There will be some unique, one-of-a-kind items, including a sculpted ceramic portrait of the person of your choice; eminently collectible signed Hugh Jackman memorabilia from “The Boy from Oz;” a children’s theatre party with cookout and backstage tour at the Players next season; an original song, written for the person/occasion of your choice by Ray Sweeney and Tim Clark; an opportunity to ‘get your clock cleaned’ by antique clock restorer Bob Boyd. And to really surprise the guests at your next party, bid on a 20-minute performance by the women’s barbershop quartet, Synchronicity, or a display of fireworks from Atlas Advanced Pyrotechnics in Jaffrey.

Other items fit the category of ‘nearly anyone can use this:’ a $500 gift certificate to the businesses of Depot Square, Peterborough; bark mulch for your garden beds; heating oil; and tree and shrub pruning or removal by Broad Oak Tree and Shrub Care.

Do you love the performing arts? If so, bid on tickets to the Boston Symphony Orchestra; spring subscription series tickets at the Redfern Arts Center of Brickyard Pond; an evening of sophisticated cocktail piano music, performed at your party by Bob Pettegrew; theatre tickets at Lincoln Center; or, closer to home, Raylynmor Opera tickets to their performances of “Ruddigore, and “La Cenerentola.” All this and much, much more will be available for bid.

The “Cookin’ at the Players” reception begins at 5:30 PM on Saturday, November 6th, providing time to preview silent and live auction items. The silent auction begins at 6 PM, with the live auction immediately following. Tickets, at $50 per person, include admission to the live and silent auctions, substantial hors d’oeuvres and desserts, an open bar, and your participation in the hottest party in town! Tickets are available by calling the Players box office at 603-924-7585 between 10-4 on weekdays. For further information, call the box office or visit www.peterboroughplayers.org.
